Whether you are struggling with specific health issues, or if your jeans are just a little more snug than you would like, here are 4 things that you should keep in mind when embarking on a mission towards a healthier life.
1. Reevaluate Your Every Day Eating Habits (And Keep Doing So Every Day!)
What do you want to improve in your eating? Whether you want to decrease the number you see on the scale, improve your cholesterol levels or if you just want to feel healthier overall, taking a hard, honest look at your everyday eating habits is a necessary step. By sitting down and thinking about what you have been putting into your mouth, you can begin to see what you need to limit, what you need to eliminate and what steps you should continue taking.
A big part of this is looking to see what you might be missing. Are you getting enough protein? What about healthy fats? If you don’t know what you are lacking, it will be nearly impossible to figure out how to fix it. I also highly suggest beginning a food journal, no matter who you are or where you are health-wise. It can be as simple as writing “I ate too many chips” or “I didn’t drink enough water today” before you go to bed, but taking a minute to reflect can make all the difference.
2. Detox by Upping Your Fiber Intake and Drinking Lots of Water
The idea of detoxing is super appealing in theory. It is easy to see how “a fresh start” would be a perfect way to kick off a new, healthier lifestyle. Unfortunately, for lots of people, it is not very practical.
An easy way to feel refreshed is to squeeze some lemon juice into a pitcher of water (I am obsessed with the taste of lemon water and its detoxifying benefits) and to drink a big glass of water in the morning, a big glass of water at noon and another big glass of water at night.
Coupling this with upping your fiber intake is a great way to make sure that your system is running as smoothly as it possibly can. Eating enough fiber can also help you drop pounds, normalize your digestive system and low cholesterol levels. While you are in detox mode, aim for at least an extra fruit and vegetable a day.
Adopting these two habits for at least three days every six months or so can help keep your body in tiptop shape. Believe me, you will feel a difference!
3. Realize Health is Not All or Nothing—and You Deserve to Feel Amazing
Some days you won’t have the time, the will or the resources to eat as healthy as you possibly can. That is okay and there is nothing constructive about beating yourself up about it.
It may sound incredibly corny, but reminding yourself every day that you are trying to live well because deserve to feel your absolute best can revitalize your spirits and strengthen your willpower. Develop a mantra and try to repeat it to yourself three times a day.
Positivity is essential to living your best life possible.
4. Want to Change Your Habits? Focus on One Goal at a Time.
Seriously. Instead of a super broad “I am going to change every aspect of my life” goal, make a list of a few things you would like to start accomplishing. Work on these one by one. Give yourself at least three months for each item on your list. It can be as simple as beginning each morning with a piece of fruit with breakfast or trying out a new dish once a month. But by focusing on individual tasks instead of juggling a lot of different goals, you can give it your 100%.
Do you have any tried and true tips for living well? What do you think is the number one thing to focus on when you are trying to live a healthier life? Do you have a mantra?
