For more than 20 years, the South County Railroaders and the Bay Area Garden Railroad Society have staged a benefit tour of local outdoor model railroads, and when the trains steamed back into the station on Saturday, August 12, there was good news to share.
Railroaders open up their homes, and visitors are free to make a cash donation or to donate non-perishable groceries, with all proceeds benefitting Community FoodBank and St. Joseph’s Center in Gilroy. This year, the Garden Railroad Tour took in 10 railways, scattered from Morgan Hill through Gilroy to Hollister and Aromas.
The weighmaster has the freight tally: $853 in cash and checks, and food donations this year eclipsed 2016’s 424 pounds as well.
Thanks go to the railroaders and to all the people who so generously pitched in to help feed people in their communities. Look for the event to return next year, and don’t be left waiting on the platform!
